Our Orange Bubble: House of Cupcakes reigns supreme

Coke versus Pepsi. In-N-Out versus Five Guys. Pat’s versus Geno’s. Customers will defend their favorite eateries to their dying breaths.

One might assume – even hope – that such an arms race would spare the docile cupcake. This is apparently not the case. The world of cutthroat cupcake baking is alive and well, and the fact hasn’t been lost on the Food Network.

The bellicosely-named Cupcake Wars pits two bakeries against each other in a flavor showdown. The show’s winner walks away with a $10,000 dollar prize.

How does this affect our hamlet, you ask? Well, Princeton’s very own House of Cupcakes has competed on the show. In fact, they won. Just last night.

The HOC's cupcakes look almost as good as they taste. That line might not be original, but the shop's recipes are.

It’s hardly a surprise. At the risk of offering free advertising, here are some of the House’s menu highlights:

Boston Cream – Vanilla cake with bavarian cream filling and chocolate topping.

German Chocolate – Chocolate cake and chocolate icing with nuts and coconut.

Mum-Mum’s Chocolate – Chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting and dark Belgian chocolate curls.

Peanut Butter Cup – Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and crumbled peanut butter cup.

Red Velvet – Need we say more?

The House of Cupcakes has announced that they will be donating their award money to the Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

After hearing tonight’s news, you can bet Princetonians will be heading over to the House of Cupcakes’ Witherspoon Street shop to see what all the hullabaloo is about. And nobody needed to pay the Prox to say that.

But how much does each cupcake cost and can I use my Tiger Points for one?
